Vacation, here we go!

A few posts ago, I commented dear hubby and I were going on vacation. Well, without further ado, we are going to Brazil!

We are going to a town named Fortaleza, all beaches and sun, and of course!, local cuisine. One of the things I absolutely love about traveling is trying the local flavors. I have noticed that clothes and some cultural aspects as a whole have become more homogeneous with globalization around the world, but food is one of those things that remains absolutely true to their origins.

The little vase above is a little ode to Brazilian myths and legends, which I am absolutely in love with. Although we are going to the Northeast of Brazil, which has its own distinct culture, the vase was painted using Marajoara art as inspiration. In a very simplistic explanation, Marajoara art is the art that was/is produced by the indigenous people of the Island of Marajo. The island is located in the very Northern part of Brazil, at the mouth of the Amazon river and it is the largest island surrounded by fresh water in the world.

I also made the vase for my little lucky bamboo. I was having a major algae problem and I read that bamboos really should be in dark vases, not clear ones, like this one was before.

These are the items used:

  • Liquitex "Basics" acrylic paint in burnt umber
  • Golden in burnt umber pearlized
  • Golden in lavender
  • Golden in black
It was not very easy to cover glass with Liquitex "Basics" acrylic paint, but after 3 coats it looked ok.

In all fairness, Marajoara art is a LOT more intricate in detail than this, but I have made peace with the fact I am a lazy artist. I can't dedicate hours to the same piece and I cannot leave an come back to the same piece.

We are leaving in a little over 1 week and I am packing my camera!

Oh wow! Brazil!

Wait they're supposed to be in dark vases? I've been having some issues with mine, and they're in clear. Hmmm...

Vacations are a wonderful way to replenish our energies - both physical energies and spiritual energies.
Wishing you a marvelous vacation filled with many warm and lovely memories. :)

btw - I think your hand painted vase is enchanting and I would never have guessed that it was not an original piece of Marajo art.
