For a love that's bigger than me

This is Sparky aka Shushu. I ask myself if it is possible to love a furry creature like I love him. He is 12 years old. I see his aging, his ailing hip now taken by arthritis, and a heart that is aging with him and requires monitoring by a cardiologist.

He jumps and he runs and makes a grumpy noise when demanding attention. Since he came into my life, no doors have ever been closed again... both figuratively and literally.

This is my most altruistic act of love. I would like to say, he asks nothing from me. But he asks for attention and chicken treats. Actually, he demands it.

Never, in a million years, I will be able to describe the love I feel for this little creature "who" makes me a better person everyday.

Hi Ana. Your post rings very true with me. There is no love like these little creatures give us. I have lost two family pet members, they are on my sidebar and it is very hard to lose them. Right now I have Chocolatte' that I got after Chorizo passed in 2007 and she is going on 5 years old already. How time flies by. I know what you mean about not ever being the same person once you have the love of your pooch. Sparky is adorable, please hug him for me. Excellent post. Have you ever noticed that when you are sad, they know and how they cuddle up to you to let you know they are there for you. Is that not love or what!! Tee hee. Take care Ana.

Aw, he is so so adorable -- his cute black nose is just like my Kipper's :) I totally understand your feelings for him. I am reminded of this quote we used to have up on the wall at the animal shelter where I used to work: "Dogs have given us their absolute all. We are the center of their universe, we are the focus of their love and faith and trust. They serve us in return for scraps. It is without a doubt the best deal man has ever made".

Your Sparky (ShuShu) is adorable Ana!

I pretty much love all animals but there comes the occasional one that I call my furry angels. There have been a few of these in my life; they wander in and settle themselves firmly in the deepest part of the heart, touching in ways that no other...either two or four legged...do, and in the process making us strive to be better people. My wee Buddha boy is one of those angels.

Wishing ShuShu peaceful and painfree days.

Sparky is adorable.. furry friends always bring out unconditional love don't they?
I pet sat for a friend's cat a few months back. She was with me only for five days but I cried when she had to leave...

I'm bonding with your boy, I know those eyes well, they have the same expression as my Jasper. How could you explain the feeling of such a deep love! x

That first picture is a bit of art work in itself. So many layers.
I think there is a special place in our hearts for our pets that nothing else can occupy. Those who never know that special love will always have an empty place there and wonder what is missing.
To quote Robert Brault "If dogs could talk, the world would lose its best listeners."
We pet owners are the lucky ones. Enjoy that handsome fellow.

Sparky is adorable. I totally understand your feelings of love for your dog, as my Ellie, a 3 year old Toy Fox Terrior, is my "Best Little Friend" and a thousand other nicknames for the Great Unconditional Love I share with her. I can't remember my life before her. I even tell her, "I hope you remember the moment you and I first met...'cause I do. You melted against me and licked my chin as I held you, and it was love at first touch." Ellie spoons me at night! Sometimes she looks into my eyes with such understanding in her big brown eyes, I am amazed.

So poignant. My dog Flynn is also 12. They still do act like puppies though don't they? Especially when they aven't seen you if you've been out somewhere. And I must say that he is a most handsome fellow! Oviously one of the most if not the most intelligent, loyal, sensitive, brave dog in the USA!

Ana, I completely understand your love for this adorable little dog! He is precious...my Ruby is also 12, and she is my best friend. When I think about how much I love her, my heart feels like it will burst...thanks for sharing your sweet photo!

Aww...Sparky is absolutely adorable! I still miss our beloved dogs---there is nothing quite like their forgiving love. There's a prayer I've heard that I like. I can't remember it exactly, but it's something like, "Lord, help me to be the person that my dog thinks I am." :-)

Ann, I came back to tell you about the chicken treats. They are saying that the Wagon Train chicken treats and other treats are still on the shelves at stores and shouldn't be because a lot of dogs have become ill and some have died. Most of these products are made in China, (lead) and China won't let the US run it's own inspections on the treats. I had a few bags of chicken jerky treats and tossed them. I decided to try to make my own doggie biscuits and beef jerky and chicken jerky treats. Just to let you know.

Your sweet little dog makes me smile. I can't imagine life without a dog in it. The unconditional, non-judgmental love is astounding. I love this quote (not sure who said it):"Let me be the person my dog thinks I am."

You have no idea of how I deeply understand you. My furry babies literally saved my life more than once with their love. I always say I can do without a boyfriend, but NEVER without a pet. The give you pure unconditional love and ask for nothing in return (apart from those turkey treats).
Hi Sparky!!

Sparky is gorgeous! I know exactly how you feel, because from the day we let our little rascal into our home and hearts he has been our constant ray of sunshine. We are devoted to him, as he is to us. i have been meeting a lot of people recently, while out walking him who have quite elderly dogs around 17/18 years old. As long as there is no pain or suffering, they toddle along nicely. I hope the same happens for my pup, and yours.

Ana, just look on the internet for how to make chicken jerky or beef jerky treats for dogs. I found mine on Ehow. They are simple to make. Didn't mean to scare you but hey, we love our family pet members. I tossed them out too and I'm making an appt. to for a check-up to make sure baby is okay.

I have the same fears. Coincidentally my recent post is about my 17 year old cat who's loosing her eyesight. Anyway Shushu looks amazingly strong and happy and full of life...so no worries there for many more years to come :). Kisses for lovely Shushu, such a cute name.

Although I do not have any pets, my heart melts when I see one. They want love from us and gives so much love in return. I have seen my friend's pet who jumps at her body and licks her face as soon as she reaches home. Even human beings cannot give us such a warm, touchy -feely welcome as soon as we reach home. I love your other pets too { as seen from the picture that you have uploaded in your blog's right sidebar }. They are adorable.

Oh... such a sweet and cute dog. I can understand your love. I had to cats, one of them passed away a year and a half ago at the age of 13 and this has broken my heart. Now I am feeling better and we have adopted a new kitty (something I thought I couldn´t do) because my other cat needed something to live for after her sister passed away, both are the joy of my days

The love from a furry creature is something I have yet to experience. We had dogs growing up but they were family dogs and I wasn't really closed to them. I tell my husband that we need to adopt a dog before we have children and after reading this post...I know it'll be worth it!
